It is important that we restore the child’s hearing if it remains low, to prevent speech, language and educational difficulties. This can be done by hearing aids (in the ear or behind it), or by a quick procedure under general anaesthetic called grommet insertion.
Since glue ear can improve by itself, your specialist may advocate waiting for up to 3 months. Following this, if the glue has not gone and the hearing loss remains, grommet insertion can be planned.
Of note, watchful waiting is not appropriate in children who are striving to develop speech, and hearing aids should be considered. You can discuss which treatment is best for your child with your surgeon.
